A day in the life of

Justyna Orlowska – Engineer, UK

When did you join nsc}? What brought you to the company?

I started working with nsc} in March 2019. I updated my CV on one of the job portals and very shortly afterwards  I received a phone call from nsc}.

Can you describe your role?

I am IT field engineer. I travel a lot across England to solve our customers’ issues.

What aspect of your job do you enjoy most and least?

The most enjoyable aspects of my job are day to day tasks, meeting new people and gaining new experiences. The least enjoyable is … M62 – traffic, traffic, traffic!

What is your greatest achievement – what are you most proud of? It can be work or personal.

The reason I am most proud of myself to date, is that I moved to England without speaking the English language, without my family and friends and without a job. I came in 2007 with a bag of clothes, some food, £600 in my pocket and a one way ticket. I started in a warehouse as a packer and from the shop floor I progressed to IT technician and then to IT field engineer.

What is your favourite country and why?

My favourite country is Poland, because it is my homeland and it holds a lot of memories. However, I feel at home in England now.

In your opinion what are the most important skills people need to succeed in the workplace?

I think people must be open to new challenges, have strong communication skills and have a passion for work.

What tech innovations are you most excited about?

I am a fan of the PlayStation games console and I have many at home ranging from PlayStation 1 to PlayStation 4 –  I’m looking forward to PlayStation 5 and beyond. I use VR technology in my PlayStation games, and I am keen to see how it will grow and impact everything virtually and in the real world.

If you didn’t do what you do – what would you do?

Working in the IT industry was my biggest dream – which has come true. However, if this hadn’t happened I would have liked to work in radio – because I’ve never met anyone who talks more than me!

Who is the most inspirational person you’ve ever met?

My partner. We have been together for 16 years and I have always been fully supported and motivated to grow and develop – this works equally both ways.  We work really well together and learn a lot from each other. Joanna constantly reminds me that it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from there is nothing you cannot achieve.

What is something people don’t know about you (and might surprise them!)?

I am quiet at home and nobody believes me. I don’t think I have any more hidden secrets.

And finally, if you could have dinner with any three people in the world who would they be? And why?

Queen Elizabeth II – because she is the most powerful woman in the world.

Pope John Paul 2 – he was a huge inspiration for my generation in Poland.

Oprah Winfrey – because like me she talks a lot and she knows everyone!
